Tree pruning is typically performed in order to protect the tree or shrub while trimming is performed to ensure perfect growth of the shrub or hedge. Although the term tree pruning and tree trimming are sometimes used interchangeably, pruning and trimming have distinct applications and functions.

Tree trimming service is applied to shrubs and hedges for design purposes. It is done to remove overgrown bushes which prevents the shrub from receiving enough moisture and light. Trimming promotes a clean look, and alleviates excessively dense bushes which block essential sunlight and moisture from reaching your landscape.

Tree pruning service involves cutting away dead, loose or infected branches so that the shrub can grow properly. It is also done to give a particular shape to the shrub for aesthetic purposes.

Pruning can be done for several purposes. Remove the excess vegetation, remove the damaged branches, cut the sick or poorly located segment; give a decorative shape to the tree, facilitate its growth, increase the fruits or improve the quality of its wood, among other things.

Pruning consists of eliminating undesirable elements such as dry branches, suckers, branches with risk of breakage, branches that impede the passage of people or touch cables or buildings and clear the glass of excess branches.

In general, the best time for pruning is late winter because:

• There are trees without foliage and allows to see the branches better.
• Growth is not affected because there is no need for sap production, as it is when it is in full growth stage (spring, summer).
• There is no dissemination of certain fungi that can enter the cut area.

The exception are trees that bloom in early spring, which should not be pruned until after flowering. Examples aromo, flower plum, flower peach, jacaranda, judea tree, etc.

Ornamental trees do not need drastic pruning just because winter has come, but only maintenance pruning is carried out according to the state of each plant. The pruning differs according to the tree. It is not the same the pruning of a fruit tree that for a correct fruiting requires to be done every year, that of an ornamental tree that should only be pruned when necessary.

Each plant has its own presentation that responds to the species and the conditions of the physical environment. The most common forms in nature are the oval, the pyramidal or conical, and the pendular. The natural forms described, where possible, should be maintained. The pruning to give a certain shape is also done at the end of winter, and it is important to give a general outline to the tree when it is still young. That outline or skeleton is formed by the main branches that start from the trunk, those that are born of them are called secondary. The most convenient is to minimize the number of branches that make up the skeleton. The mode of pruning depends on the general form that you want to give to a tree. If you want a branch to leave the center of the tree, cut it to an outward directed bud. If what you want is a compact cup, cut the yolks directed upwards and try to keep them all together.
